ARTscapades is delighted to bring you this unique and exciting programme of art through talks by expert speakers. We continue to be grateful for your support which enables profits from our ticket sales to help UK museums and arts-based organisations.
Discover What’s left of Early Stuart London on a virtual tour with Katie Wignall, and the Lost Gardens of London you never knew with Todd Longstaffe-Gowan.
Join our special talks on key exhibitions by Karen Serres, curator of Monet and London: Views of the Thames at the Courtauld Gallery; and by Cornelia Homburg, guest curator of the National Gallery’s landmark exhibition Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers.
Ben Street discusses the portraits of Francis Bacon. Catherine Daunt, curator of the British Museum’s upcoming Picasso: printmaker, reveals the significance of printmaking for the artist.
Go deeper on our study afternoon with Diana Darke to explore How Islamic Architecture Shaped Europe and in our two-part Short Course with Richard Stemp on the exhibition opening soon at the Royal Academy: Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael: Florence c.1504.
In December, with the re-opening of Notre-Dame, hear about its history and rebuilding from Russell Kelley in partnership with the Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris. Then look to the skies as Hilary Hope Guise presents Star of Wonder, Star of Light: The Real Star of Bethlehem.
All events take place via Zoom Webinar and can be watched live including Q&A. Ticket holders will be emailed a link to join 24 hours in advance. In case you can’t make it on the day, ticket holders will also receive a link to view a recording of the talk, which will be available for one month.
Ticket proceeds go to help support UK museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations.

Picasso was one of the most creative and experimental talents ever to explore the medium of print. British Museum exhibition curator Catherine Daunt discusses highlights of the Museum’s new exhibition Picasso: printmaker for ARTscapades. Focusing on some major themes in Picasso’s art including bullfights, the Minotaur and his complex, and at times troubling, depictions of women.

Tuesday 3 December 2024, 5-7.30pm. £20
In 1504 Michelangelo finished his marble David and Leonardo took part in the discussions to decide where it should go. Later that year Raphael arrived in Florence, where his work was transformed by the influence of the two feuding masters. ARTscapades’ two-part course with Richard Stemp explores how this explosive combination of events and personalities is reflected in the Royal Academy’s upcoming landmark exhibition.

Tuesday 10 December 2024, 2.30-4pm. £10
Explore the long and dramatic history of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, from its foundation in 1163 to the devastating fire in April 2019, which destroyed its attic, roof, and iconic spire. The talk will also cover the monumental restoration efforts that have been underway to prepare the cathedral for its grand reopening on 8 December 2024.

One of the most magical images of the Christmas Story is that of an extremely bright light in the darkest night, a light that travels through the night for weeks and guides three exotic strangers from distant lands. Join Hilary Hope Guise to discover what we know about the real “Star” of Bethlehem.
